Franco/Arabic Cultures Today:
Developments, Dialogues, and Challenges

April 17-19, 2008
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
Conference organized by Sahar Amer, Associate Professor of Asian Studies, Arabic Program, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Martine Antle, Professor of French, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Click here for a printable copy of this call for papers (pdf).

The goal of this conference is to initiate a dialogue between the fields of Francophone and Franco-Arabic Studies in Europe, in the former French colonies and mandates, and in the US. In what ways and to what extent have these disciplines come into contact with one another over the past three decades: literature, cinema, music, and visual arts? What intellectual, pedagogical, ideological and cultural frameworks have shaped comparative scholarly inquiries into these disciplines? Our objective is to better understand the current state of scholarship into Franco-Arabic cultures, and to bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines to reflect upon the intersections, challenges and future of Franco-Arabic and Francophone cultures.
We invite contributions relating to all cultural inquiries into arabofrancophonie, including, but not limited to:
--The future of Franco-Arabic Studies in the EU and in the US.
--Franco-Arabic identities and linguistic diversity  in Europe and in the former French colonies or mandates
--Teaching cultural diversity: The cultural landscape of the Franco-Arabic world within the academy and their place within European Studies (courses taught, critical approaches, dissertations, publications, professional associations)
--Comparative and interdisciplinary approaches to Franco-Arabic literature: how to facilitate future exchanges and collaborations between researchers.
--The role played by American (and international) institutions in fostering communication between the teaching of French and of Arabic
--What effects do the contemporary political climate and the discourse of a global war on terrorism threaten to bring about on the future of Francophone-Arabic Studies in the United States and elsewhere?
All other approaches and treatments of the topic are welcome. Deadline for individual paper proposals (400 words) as well as panel proposals is December 1, 2007.

Reading Les Fleurs du Mal Today
  Public Lecture by
Jonathan Culler

October 2, 2007, 5:15 pm
Diffenbaugh 009, Florida State University

When published in 1857, Baudelaire's collection of poems, Les Fleurs du Mal, was prosecuted for obscenity and found guilty of offense to public morals. Today Les Fleurs du Mal is a celebrated, canonized work, though many editions omit the six poems that were banned by the court or relegate them to an appendix.  How should we read Les Fleurs du Mal today?  For example, Baudelaire originally proposed to call his collection “Les Lesbiennes” and two of the banned poems focus on lesbian relationships. How do these poems relate to today's interest in gay and lesbian studies? And what can we make of the poetry of "evil," which the title claims to offer us? These and related questions are addressed by Professor Jonathan Culler in a public lecture arranged by the Winthrop-King Institute for Contemporary French and Francophone Studies marking the 150th anniversary of the publication of Baudelaire's landmark work.

Jonathan Culler teaches English and Comparative Literature at Cornell, where in 1982 he succeeded M. H. Abrams as Class of 1916 Professor of English. A 1966 graduate of Harvard, he won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford where he took a B. Phil in Comparative Literature and a D. Phil. in Modern Languages. He taught French at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and Brasenose College, Oxford, before moving to Cornell.

Most of his publications bear on contemporary critical theory, French and English:  Structuralist Poetics (winner of  the MLA’s 1976 Lowell Prize), On Deconstruction (his best known work), Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction (which has been translated into some twenty languages), short books on Roland Barthes and Ferdinand de Saussure, and three collections of essays on theoretical topics –most recently, The Literary in Theory (Stanford 2006).  His first book was Flaubert: The Uses of Uncertailty, and he is working on books on the theory of the lyric and on Baudelaire.
He has been President of American Semiotic Society, Trustee of the English Institute, and President of the American Comparative Literature Association, as well as a member of the Board of the American Council of Learned Societies, the Advisory Board of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, and the Executive Council or the MLA’s. He has held Guggenheim and NEH fellowships and has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.

The Florida State University,
The Winthrop-King Institute for
Contemporary French and Francophone Studies
& The College of Social Sciences
invite you to attend a public lecture featuring:

Azouz Begag

French Minister for Equal Opportunities 2005-2007

Lecture in English:
“The Politics of Anti-Racism in France: Lessons from Government”

Thursday, October 18, 2007, 3:30 - 5:00PM
Broad Lecture Hall, Pepper Building, FSU Campus

Azouz Begag served as Minister for Equal Opportunities in the French government from 2005 to 2007. Prior to taking office, he was already widely known as a writer and sociologist. Drawing on both his personal experience as the son of an Algerian immigrant worker and his research as a sociologist, he had become a leading authority on the socially disadvantaged multi-ethnic urban areas known in France as the banlieues, roughly equivalent to what in the United States are often colloquially termed “ghettoes”. As Minister for Equal Opportunities Begag was responsible for moving forward public policy in the fight against racial and other forms of discrimination, which had produced spiraling unemployment among minority ethnic groups in the banlieues. Only a few months after taking office, the government in which Begag served was faced by the nation's most serious civil disturbances in almost forty years, when young men in the banlieues burned cars and attacked police stations in cities throughout France. Begag clashed fiercely with the then Interior Minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, who described disruptive youths in the banlieues as “racaille” (scum). In April 2007, on the eve of the elections in which Sarkozy  was elected President, Begag resigned from the government to publish an outspoken account of his period in office, including his clashes with Sarkozy. In his lecture, Begag will discuss these and related issues and will answer questions from the audience.

Azouz Begag was born in Lyon, France’s second city, in 1957 and was raised in a shantytown there. His best-selling narratives include the autobiographical Le Gone du Chaâba (1986) (translated as Shantytown Kid, 2007). As a sociologist with the Conseil National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), he has published numerous essays on ethnicity, multiculturalism and social integration in France including Les Dérouilleurs (2002), L’Intégration (2003) and Ethnicity and Equality: France in the Balance (2007). He has served as a member of France’s Conseil Economique et Social, which advises on social and economic policy, and has been a Visiting Professor in the Winthrop-King Institute for Contemporary French and Francophone Studies at Florida State University since 2002. In 2004 he was awarded the Légion d’Honneur by President Jacques Chirac.

Rethinking French Intellectuals

International Symposium
November 5-6, 2007
Diffenbaugh 009, Florida State University, Tallahassee

During the century since intellectuals first emerged as a publicly recognized category in France, there have been many changes in both the concept and status of intellectuals. While their death has been frequently announced of late, they show remarkable longevity albeit in evolving guises. This international symposium aims to re-assess the role of French intellectuals in relation to the political sphere, a relationship through which, during the Dreyfus affair, they were first defined as a distinct social and professional category. In particular, speakers will seek to elucidate changing and in some cases neglected aspects of the public role of intellectuals. These include the relationship between intellectuals and the media, the role of intellectuals as expert witnesses in politically charged criminal trials, the rise of ‘Francophone’ (as distinct from ‘French’) intellectuals, the gendering of intellectual interventions and the challenge of new ethnicities and belief systems in the light of the century-old law on laïcité.
