The successful candidate will teach language and literature at all levels. Native or near-native fluency and evidence of teaching excellence required. Primary specialization pre-1700; secondary specializtion in Francophone, cultural studies, or film is desired but not required. Ph.D. preferred.

Le (la) candidat(e) retenu(e) sera en charge du domaine de la francophonie (langue, culture, traduction) dans l’enseignement et la recherche.  Il (elle) détiendra un doctorat sanctionné d’une très bonne note et devra afficher un intérêt particulier pour la recherche et l’enseignement des cultures francophones et des variétés de la langue française. Le (la) candidat(e) idéal(e) sera de préférence spécialisé(e) en francophonie extra-européenne. La personne recherchée aura pour souci de vouloir créer un pole de recherche en traductologie. The Department of French and Francophone Studies is inviting applications for one tenure-track position, starting Fall 2010.

Primary Area of specialization: The History and Development of the Novel


The department is seeking candidates whose strong teaching skills and innovative research will significantly contribute to its renewal and to the broadening of the French and Francophone curriculum. We are especially interested in candidates with the ability to make their respective fields of expertise relevant to students in a liberal arts environment. Candidates should have expertise in literature and culture, with a primary focus on one or more of the following fields: the history and development of the Novel, with solid background in intellectual history, cultural, social or political theory, as connected to the Novel, colonial narratives, emergence of new discourses in literature and media (medical, economic, artistic, legal, new mappings of the world), representations of technology in the novel (photography, painting, dance, etc.), travel narratives, the urbanization of the novel, etc. Secondary area of specialization desirable: North American or European francophone literature and culture outside of France, poetry, theatre, visual culture.
 
Through the department of French and Francophone studies, there are opportunities to collaborate actively with several interdisciplinary programs and departments such as the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Humanities, Media, and Cultural Studies, Human Rights and Humanitarianism concentration, and International Studies.
 
Candidates’ scholarship and teaching should be consistent with the mission of Macalester College and its emphasis on academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism, and civic engagement. Candidates should have a strong teaching record. Interest in teaching for the general curriculum and courses about France in English for the college at large are also highly desirable.
 
Normal teaching responsibilities include a balance of language instruction and more advanced courses as well as participation in co-curricular activities (the department has a dynamic French Lecture Series and programs activities at the French house and in the Twin Cities). Native or near-native proficiency in French as well as excellence in teaching and in scholarship are required. Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to liberal arts education.

Postdoctoral Fellowship, Moreau Academic Diversity, University of Notre Dame

The Moreau Academic Diversity Postdoctoral Program seeks to increase the number of scholars who will contribute to the intellectual vibrancy and research excellence of The University of Notre Dame by providing a two-year research, teaching, and mentoring experience.

Fellows will devote their time to research and will teach two courses each year during their tenure. The first will be in the area of their specialization. The second will be a core undergraduate offering for the department serving as their home. Fellows will also be a part of mentoring initiatives sponsored by their host department and the evaluation of each fellow for possible appointment to a teaching-and-research position at the University.

The Columbia-Penn Program in Paris at Reid Hall seeks candidates for the position of Director of its undergraduate study abroad programs based in Paris, France. These programs are administered by the Office of Global Programs (OGP) atColumbia University and offers semester, academic year, and summer programs. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Global Programs and working closely with Columbia University's OGP and the Columbia-Penn Faculty Advisory Committee, the Director is responsible for the oversight of the academic programs, student affairs, and administrative and financial management. The Director supervises administrative staff that assists in all areas of program management. The Director is charged with nourishing an intellectual and social environment that is supportive of excellence and high academic standards.

Specific duties include:

- Enable student and faculty use of local libraries and other scholarly resources.
- Oversee the general functioning of French University exchange agreements.
- Develop linkages with local academic communities, government agencies in France, alumni and donors
- Maintain a regular on-site presence, providing advice and resources to students on academic, intellectual and personal matters.
- Supervise student homestays, apartments, and dorm-room residencies in liaison with the outsourced housing service in Paris.
- Organize and deliver orientation programs for incoming students; generate and oversee all orientation materials.
- Maintain discipline among students and handle emergencies in partnership with local security, medical resources, and the OGP.
- Supervise the organization of social and cultural events for students.
- Facilitate student involvement in community activities and cultural opportunities.
- On-call 24/7 to troubleshoot emergencies.
- Manage staff including hiring, training, motivating, evaluating performance and setting salaries according to CU and A&S policies.
- Work directly with Columbia OGP to prepare annual budget; manage all fiscal activities for a ~$2 million budget
- Manage office space and arrange for service contracts and legal services as needed.
- Manage the technological infrastructure for academic and administrative purposes, in coordination with Columbia OGP, including all web-based
documentation and resources.
- Work with local organizations to ensure compliance with local laws and regulations.
- Supervise all financial aspects pertaining to bank accounts, payment of services, payroll, etc.
- Represent the programs in France, Europe, and USA.
- Participate in student recruitment.
- Yearly report on program activities to the appropriate committees at Columbia and at partner universities.
- Works closely with French Institutions.
- Work in close contact with all administrative staff of Columbia OGP.
- Host visitors and maintain contact with advocates for the program.
- Provide all necessary documents, information for the Columbia website, etc.
- Supervises approximately 5 to 7 employees.

The Director must also be academically qualified to hold an appointment as an adjunct officer of instruction in the grade of adjunct professor,
adjunct associate professor, or adjunct assistant professor. The specific duties attached to this appointment include:

- Teach no more than two courses per year, oversee the approval of the curricular program, oversee the appointment and teaching of faculty in the
program.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience required.
Language fluency in English and French.
French cultural fluency, with outreach to other European and Francophone countries.
Experience with overseas study programs.
Excellent computer skills (especially Word, Excel, electronic platforms).
Ability to undertake international travel.
Excellent communication skills, outgoing, dynamic, flexible.
Experience with working in an academic environment.

PhD degree strongly preferred.

French working papers preferred.
